Bank Balance

Available Balance vs Current Balance: What Each Number Leaves Out

Current balance records what has posted. Available balance accounts for holds and some pending activity. Neither knows about every bill still on its way. Here is how to read both numbers before you spend.

Available balance vs current balance, side by side

Your bank shows the same account at two stages of processing. As SoFi explains in its balance guide, current balance generally reflects posted credits and debits. Available balance also accounts for pending activity and funds you cannot use yet. Your bank's timing and labels may differ, so check its transaction details when the numbers surprise you.

Neither number answers what you can spend without disturbing rent, groceries, or a savings goal. That is the question behind a safe-to-spend number.

Current balanceAvailable balance

Does it reserve future bills or savings goals?NoNo

The available balance is often lower, but the calculation varies by bank. A deposit can appear in one balance before all of it becomes available. A merchant can authorize one amount and settle another.

Why is my available balance lower than my current balance?

The gap usually comes from activity the bank knows about but has not posted. Bankrate's explanation of the two balances names pending transactions, temporary holds, and deposits that have not cleared as common causes.

  • A debit card purchase is pending. The merchant has authorization, so the bank may set that amount aside even though the final charge has not posted to your current balance.
  • A merchant placed a temporary hold. A gas pump, hotel, or restaurant may reserve an amount that changes when the final charge arrives.
  • A recent deposit is on hold. The deposit may show in the account while some or all of it remains unavailable. Ask your bank when the held funds will become available.

A payment you know is coming may appear in neither balance. A paper check has to be presented. A bill scheduled for next week has not necessarily reached your account. Your bank cannot reserve money for a plan it has not seen.

A $1,200 example

Say your checking account shows a $1,200 current balance. A $75 debit card purchase is pending. If your bank holds that amount, the available balance may show $1,125. Do not subtract the $75 a second time.

Now add what the bank has not seen. Rent of $900 is due tomorrow, and you still need $100 for the rest of the week's essentials. If neither amount is pending yet, the arithmetic looks like this:

StepAmount left
Available balance after the card hold$1,125
Set aside tomorrow's rent$225
Set aside the remaining essentials$125

A $300 purchase might go through today. It would leave you $75 short on rent before you buy the remaining essentials. The $125 is a planning figure, not a new bank balance or a promise that every charge will clear. If rent or essentials already appear as pending, do not subtract them twice.

When the $75 card purchase finally posts, the current balance should fall and the matching hold should release. The available balance may barely change. If the final charge differs from the authorization, the numbers may move again.

Which balance should I use before spending?

For a purchase or withdrawal, look at available balance first. It reflects more of the activity the bank knows about than current balance does. Refresh the account details before a large payment; a balance can change after you last opened the app. Neither figure guarantees that a later check or automatic payment will clear.

Then count commitments the bank has not recorded: bills due before the next payday, outstanding checks, essentials, and savings. Subtract only items that are not already reflected in the available balance. If that leaves little room, the larger number on the bank screen does not create more room.

Use current balance to compare posted activity with your receipts and statements. If a purchase is missing, check whether it is pending before treating it as forgotten money. If the two balances still do not make sense, ask the bank how it calculated them.

A bank balance still cannot tell you what is safe this week

The bank can show what is available under its rules right now. It does not know whether you promised yourself to save $100 or whether you need the remaining cash for Friday's bills. That is why reading a bank balance as spending permission gets people into trouble even when the bank's number is accurate.

Pace counts fixed costs, upcoming bills, savings goals, and spending before showing one weekly safe-to-spend number. Account links through Plaid are read-only. Pace does not hold your money or replace your bank's available balance. If the bank says only $80 is available in the account you plan to use, a higher weekly number in an app does not make a $100 debit safe.

This article is educational, not financial advice. Your bank's account terms and transaction details control how its balances are calculated.

Frequently asked questions

Is available balance the amount I can spend without overdrafting?

It is the better bank number to check before a transaction because it can reflect pending authorizations and holds. It is not a guarantee. Another payment may arrive, a hold may change, or an outstanding check may clear. Leave room for anything that has not reached the bank.

Why are my available and current balances the same?

There may be no pending activity or holds affecting the amount you can use. The bank may also have posted the transactions you were watching. Check the transaction list if you expected a difference.

Why did a gas station or hotel change my available balance?

The merchant may have placed a temporary authorization hold before the final amount was known. The available balance can fall while the current balance stays put. When the final charge posts, the hold should release; the final amount may differ.

Is available credit on a credit card the same as available balance in checking?

No. Available credit is how much more the card issuer may let you borrow against your credit limit. A checking account's available balance concerns funds the bank currently makes available from that account. Check which account you are viewing before comparing the labels.

How much of my available balance can I spend?

There is no universal percentage. Subtract bills, outstanding checks, essentials, and savings that the bank has not already reflected. The amount left is your plan for this week, subject to the bank's available balance. For help with the bills-first arithmetic, take the spending quiz.
